Questions about the test

How long does the English level test take?

About 40 minutes in total. There are five timed sections: Reading, Listening, Use of English, Writing and Speaking. Most free online level tests take ten minutes because they only ask multiple-choice grammar questions. This one asks you to actually write and speak, which is why it takes longer and why the result is more useful.

Is the test really free?

Yes. There is no payment and no subscription. You do not need to create an account, but you do give a name and an email address so we can send you a copy of your results and your recommended course.

What is a CEFR level?

CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference — the international six-point scale used to describe language ability, from A1 (beginner) through A2, B1, B2 and C1 to C2 (mastery). This test places you between A1 and C1 overall, and also gives you a separate estimate for each of the five skills, so you can see where your strengths and gaps are.

Is my voice recording stored?

No. Your spoken answer is transcribed to text as soon as you submit it, and the audio is discarded in the same request — it is never written to disk and never kept. What we store is the transcript and the marks. Full detail is in our privacy policy.

Who marks the writing and speaking sections?

Your writing and your speaking transcript are marked by AI against the ESLe assessment rubrics, using the same criteria our teachers use. You get a band score per skill plus written feedback explaining the score. Reading, Listening and Use of English are marked automatically against the answer key.

How accurate is the result?

It is a well-evidenced estimate, not a qualification. Five skills sampled across roughly forty minutes gives a far better picture than a grammar quiz, and it is enough to place you on the right course. It is not a substitute for an official Cambridge, IELTS or IGCSE certificate, and we never present it as one.

What if I do not have a microphone?

The test still works. There is a sound and microphone check before you start, so you find out early. If no microphone is available, the Speaking section is skipped and marked as not assessed, and your CEFR estimate is calculated from the four remaining skills.

Can I take the test more than once?

Once every six months. If you return sooner, we show you your previous result and the date you can retake. The limit exists because a level estimate only means something if enough learning has happened in between.

Which exams does the result map to?

Your CEFR band points to the right exam track: B1 towards Cambridge B1 Preliminary and IGCSE ESL, B2 towards Cambridge B2 First and IB English B Standard Level, C1 towards IB English B Higher Level and Cambridge C1 Advanced. The result page names the specific ESLe course that fits.

Is the test available in my language?

The instructions and interface are available in over forty languages, chosen from the menu before you begin. The test material itself — the reading passages, the listening clips, the prompts — is always in English. Translating those would change what is being measured.

Can schools use this to place a whole class?

Yes. Schools get a branded campaign link with one single-use token per student, optional year-group tagging, and results delivered to the admissions or department inbox rather than to the students. It runs inside a normal lesson period. Get in touch to set up a cohort.
