Meet Sofia: A New Student's Story
Hello! My name is Sofia, and I'm fourteen years old. I come from a small town called Medellín in Colombia, but I moved to this city two years ago with my family. My parents are both teachers, and my younger brother, Marco, is twelve. I live with my family in an apartment near the school.
I'm quite shy at first, but my friends say I'm funny and kind. I have long dark hair and I love wearing bright colours. In my free time, I play volleyball twice a week, and I enjoy reading adventure books. Last summer, I helped my grandmother in her garden, which was really fun. I used to play the piano when I was younger, but I stopped three years ago.
This year, I have some goals. I'm going to make new friends in this English class and improve my writing skills. I would like to travel to at least two new countries before I finish school. Most of all, I'd like to help other people and maybe become a teacher like my parents one day.
Vocabulary Practice
Practise the 12 key vocabulary items from this lesson through three exercises.
Vocabulary Practice — Unit 0: Who are you? (New)
Work through all three parts. Each part uses the same vocabulary in a different way.
Writing Task
Your teacher is creating a class welcome wall where every student will display a short personal profile. This helps everyone learn about each other at the start of the year. You will write about who you are now, where you come from, and what you want to achieve this year. Your profile will be read by your classmates and teacher.
You should address:
- Name, age, and where you are from or where you have lived
- Your family / who you live with now
- Your interests and hobbies (what you like to do)
- One goal for the year ahead using 'going to' or 'would like to'
Plan:
Introduction: Write your name, age, and where you come from or have lived.
Body paragraph 1: Say who you live with and describe them briefly using simple present or past simple.
Body paragraph 2: Share two or three hobbies or activities you enjoy.
Conclusion: End with one clear goal for the year using 'going to' or 'would like to'.
