Anagram — ESL Vocabulary and Spelling Practice

What is the Anagram game?

Anagram scrambles the letters of a vocabulary word and challenges students to unscramble them to find the correct spelling. A definition clue is shown to confirm the meaning — students must both recall the word and spell it accurately. Questions are drawn from the ESLe College vocabulary database across Pre-A1 to C2 level.

How to play

Read the definition clue carefully. Look at the scrambled letters and rearrange them to spell the correct vocabulary word. Type your answer and press Check. If correct, the word is revealed and you move to the next question. If wrong, try again or use the Hint to reveal one letter.

  • Definition clue is always shown to confirm the meaning
  • Filter by level and topic for targeted practice
  • Hint reveals one letter at a time if you are stuck
  • Score and streak are tracked throughout the session

Why anagrams improve spelling

Unscrambling a word requires students to mentally rehearse different spelling combinations until the correct sequence is found — a process that strengthens orthographic memory. Students who can unscramble a word have internalised its letter pattern, which directly improves spelling accuracy in writing tasks.

For teachers

Anagram works well as a spelling-focused homework task or competitive class activity. Filter to the vocabulary set from your current unit and ask students to complete a session without using the Hint — screenshots of their score provide a simple accountability measure. The definition clue means the activity tests spelling specifically, not vocabulary knowledge, making it a fair assessment of written form.
