Countdown — ESL Vocabulary Word Game

What is the Countdown game?

Countdown is based on the iconic British television word game. A set of letters appears on screen and students have 30 seconds to find the longest vocabulary word they can make using only those letters. Words must be real vocabulary items from the ESLe College database — proper nouns and obscure words are not accepted. The longest valid word wins the round.

How to play

When the letters appear, scan them quickly and find the longest vocabulary word you can make. Click letters in order to build your word, then submit before the 30-second timer runs out. The game checks your word against the vocabulary database and scores you based on word length. Try to use as many letters as possible.

  • 30 seconds to find the longest valid word
  • Click letters to build your word in order
  • Longer words score more points
  • Only vocabulary words from the database are accepted

Why Countdown builds vocabulary

Scanning a random set of letters for known words activates a broad range of vocabulary simultaneously, reinforcing multiple word forms at once. Students who regularly play Countdown develop faster lexical access — the speed at which they can retrieve words — which directly benefits reading speed and writing fluency under exam time pressure.

Vocabulary focus: Lexical retrieval speed, spelling recognition, word knowledge breadth

For teachers

Countdown works perfectly as a class warmup or end-of-lesson filler. Display it on the board with the timer running — students write their best word on mini whiteboards and reveal simultaneously. The competitive format generates energy and discussion. Works best with B1 and above students who have a broad enough vocabulary to find longer words reliably.
