Matching Pairs — ESL Vocabulary Practice
What is the Matching Pairs game?
Matching Pairs displays a grid of cards face down. One set of cards shows vocabulary words, the other shows their definitions. Students flip two cards at a time, trying to find each word-definition pair. Matched pairs stay face up; unmatched cards flip back over. The game ends when all pairs are matched.
Words and definitions are drawn from the ESLe College vocabulary database across Pre-A1 to C2 level, covering all exam-relevant topics.
How to play
Click or tap any card to flip it face up. Click a second card to reveal it. If the word and definition match, both cards stay visible and your score increases. If they do not match, both flip back after a short pause — try to remember where each card was. Find all pairs to complete the session.
- Filter by level and topic to focus on specific vocabulary
- Unmatched pairs flip back — memory is part of the challenge
- Moves and time are tracked throughout the session
- Fewer moves in less time means a higher score
Why matching pairs builds vocabulary
The memory game format requires students to hold a word or definition in working memory while scanning for its pair — a process that deepens the word-meaning association more than passive reading. The delayed reveal creates retrieval practice: students must actively recall what they saw rather than recognise it from a list.
