Word Detective — ESL Vocabulary Guessing Game

What is the Word Detective game?

Word Detective is ESLe's version of the classic word-guessing game. A hidden vocabulary word is chosen and students guess letters one at a time. Correct letters are revealed in their positions; incorrect guesses are tracked and count against the total allowed. Students must identify the word before they run out of attempts.

Words are drawn from the ESLe College vocabulary database. A definition clue is revealed progressively to help students narrow down the word as the game develops.

How to play

Look at the blank letter spaces and the definition clue. Click or type a letter to guess. If the letter appears in the word, all its positions are revealed. If it does not, it is added to the incorrect letters list. Keep guessing until the full word is revealed or you reach the maximum incorrect guesses.

  • Definition clue is shown and becomes more detailed as guesses are made
  • Filter by level and topic to match your class
  • Correct letters are revealed in position immediately
  • Maximum incorrect guesses before the round is lost

Why word detective builds vocabulary

The guessing format forces students to reason about word structure — common letters, word length, and partial patterns — while holding the definition in mind. This dual processing of form and meaning is highly effective for cementing word knowledge. The progressive clue reveal ensures the activity is accessible to all levels without giving away the answer too quickly.

For teachers

Word Detective works well as an end-of-lesson vocabulary review or a whole-class guessing activity projected on the board. Students take turns suggesting letters while the class discusses possible words. The definition clue feature transforms it from a spelling game into a meaning-focused activity — students are reading and processing definitions, not just guessing at random.
