Spot the Mistake — ESL Grammar Practice

What is the Spot the Mistake game?

Spot the Mistake presents a sentence containing one deliberate grammar error. Students must identify the incorrect word or phrase and either choose the correct replacement from four options in MCQ mode, or type it directly in Written mode. Every question includes an explanation of the grammar rule that was broken, making each answer a learning moment.

Questions are drawn from the ESLe College grammar database, targeting the error types most commonly made by students preparing for IGCSE ESL, IB English B and Cambridge B2 First examinations.

How to play

Read the sentence carefully and find the grammar error. In MCQ mode select the correct replacement from four options. In Written mode type the corrected word or phrase directly. After answering, read the explanation to understand the grammar rule before pressing Next.

  • Switch between MCQ and Written mode using the dropdown
  • Filter by level to match questions to your exam
  • Each sentence contains exactly one grammar error
  • Explanations identify the specific rule broken and why
  • Timed mode adds a 30-second countdown per question
  • Score and streak are tracked throughout the session

Why error correction is essential exam practice

The ability to identify and correct grammar errors appears directly in Cambridge B2 First Use of English and in the self-correction skills assessed in IGCSE ESL writing. Students who practise error identification consistently develop a sharper grammatical eye — they learn to catch mistakes in their own writing before submission, which directly improves exam writing scores.

Exam relevance: Cambridge B2 First Use of English · IGCSE ESL writing self-correction · IB English B

For teachers

Spot the Mistake is particularly effective as a writing follow-up activity. After marking a set of student essays, identify the two or three most common error types and assign a session filtered to those grammar points. Students receive targeted correction practice on the exact mistakes they are making, without the demotivating experience of receiving a marked essay.
