Team Picker — Random Class Divider for Teachers

Dividing a class into teams fairly, quickly and without the social awkwardness of student selection is one of those small classroom problems that takes up more time and energy than it should. The Team Picker solves it completely — enter your class size, choose the number of teams, press go, and every student is randomly assigned in seconds. One of the tools in the ESLe Teacher Hub, it works for any group activity regardless of subject.

How to use it

Enter the number of students in your class and choose how many teams you want. Press Pick Teams and the randomiser distributes students evenly across the teams, handling uneven numbers automatically. Teams are labelled and colour-coded so students can see at a glance which group they are in.

  • Works for any class size and any number of teams
  • Handles uneven numbers automatically — no leftover students
  • Fully random — no patterns, no favourites, no complaints
  • Re-pick instantly for a new random split
  • Colour-coded teams visible from the back of the classroom

Why random teams matter

Students left to self-select teams almost always produce the same groupings — friends together, strong students together, quieter students marginalised. Random assignment breaks these patterns, forces students to work with classmates they do not usually interact with, and distributes ability levels more evenly across groups. Research in classroom dynamics consistently shows that mixed-ability random groups produce better outcomes for lower-ability students without negatively affecting higher-ability ones.

The randomness also removes the social anxiety of selection — no student is picked last, no student feels rejected, and the teacher is not put in the position of making decisions that students might perceive as unfair. The machine decided. Move on.

For teachers

Use the Team Picker before any group activity — Vocabulary Bingo, Blockbusters, debate tasks, project work or peer review sessions. Keep it open in a tab alongside your lesson and use it whenever the class needs splitting. It takes about ten seconds from opening to teams assigned.
