Word Search — ESL Vocabulary Practice
What is the Word Search game?
Word Search generates a custom letter grid containing hidden ESL vocabulary words drawn from your level and topic. Students scan the grid and click or tap each word when they find it. Every hidden word is shown as a definition clue below the grid — students must connect the clue to the correct word before they can mark it as found.
Words are drawn from the ESLe College vocabulary database of over 8,000 items across Pre-A1 to C2 level, covering all topics tested in IGCSE ESL, IB English B and Cambridge B2 First examinations.
How to play
Read the definition clues below the grid. When you spot the matching word in the grid, click the first letter, drag across, and release on the last letter to mark it. Found words are highlighted and crossed off the clue list. Complete all words to finish the session.
- Filter by CEFR level and topic to match your class
- Words are hidden horizontally, vertically and diagonally
- Definition clues are shown — find the word that matches
- Timer tracks how long each session takes
Why word search builds vocabulary
Searching for a word while holding its definition in mind reinforces the word-meaning connection more effectively than simple reading or flashcard review. The visual scanning process also trains students to recognise spelling patterns quickly — a skill that transfers directly to reading comprehension tasks under time pressure.
